Why Matt Marshall

Why plants call Matt Marshall & Co.

Steam is our specialty. Our team works on the full steam system: the boiler, the burner and controls, the feedwater pumps and deaerator, the traps and the condensate return. Because we keep parts in Greensboro, a failed component can often be replaced from our own shelves instead of waiting on a supplier.

Exclusive Continental Boiler parts dealer

We can identify and supply parts for older Continental boilers that are otherwise obsolete.

Authorized Honeywell RM7800 stocking distributor

A failed flame safeguard can keep a boiler from firing. We keep RM7800 controls in stock.

Backed by the Thermogenics network

As part of Thermogenics, we draw on over 10 locations across North America, a boiler factory, a containerized rental fleet and Halmar Boiler Parts.

Industries

Industries we support across the Carolinas

Much of our work is in plants where steam drives the process: food and beverage lines, breweries and distilleries, pharmaceutical and chemical plants, textile and tobacco operations, and corrugated paper. We also maintain heating and steam plants at hospitals, campuses, school systems, retirement homes, military installations and state and federal buildings.

Boiler maintenance

Boiler maintenance across the Carolinas & Virginia

We check the whole boiler room, not just the boiler. Maintenance plans can cover combustion analysis, safety control tests, feedwater pump and deaerator checks and water softener evaluation. Plans run monthly, quarterly or annually, and we schedule inspections around your production calendar.

North Carolina inspects boilers and pressure vessels under the Uniform Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act, administered by the North Carolina Department of Labor – Boiler Safety Bureau. We prepare your equipment for those inspections, open and clean the boiler, and fix what the inspector flags. In South Carolina and Virginia we work to the local jurisdiction’s rules.

Steam trap surveys, tube cleaning and efficiency

Failed traps waste steam quietly. In a system left alone for 3–5 years, 15–30% of traps can fail, and regular surveys can bring that under 5%. One stuck trap on a 150 psig line, with steam at $10 per 1,000 lb, cost $6,640 a year. We survey traps, run tube cleaning systems to keep heat transfer up, inspect deaerators and tune burners. Combustion tuning alone can yield 1–3% fuel savings, and we follow it with energy audits when a plant wants more.

Boiler repair

Boiler repair in the Carolinas & southern Virginia

24/7 emergency boiler repairBoiler down: call our Greensboro team at 336-292-8477.

In a hospital or a food plant, a boiler outage gets expensive fast. On an emergency call, the first job is to get the boiler back on line safely. That might mean replacing a flame safeguard, rebuilding a feedwater pump or patching refractory. Then we find the cause of the failure.

Because our crews include boiler mechanics, welders and pipefitters, one visit can cover the burner, the controls and the piping. We repair and retrofit burners from Power Flame, Webster, Industrial Combustion, Weishaupt and Cleaver-Brooks, and controls from Fireye, Honeywell, Siemens and Autoflame. For larger jobs such as retubing, we coordinate the work with a specialist contractor.

Burner conversions, pumps and refractory

We convert burners between fuels, rebuild boiler feedwater pumps and repair refractory and castable insulation. Grundfos lead times can run 8–10 weeks for a repair kit and 10–12 weeks for a new pump, so our in-house Pump Rebuild Program and parts stock can keep a feed pump outage short. We also stock rebuilt Cleaver-Brooks doors and can rebuild your existing door on site, which can shorten an outage.

Parts for older Continental boilers

Our records and drawings cover Continental boilers from 1950 to the mid-1970s. Send the serial number and we can match parts.

Feedwater systems for rent

We also rent feedwater systems in several capacities and pressures, a practical bridge while a deaerator or feed pump is repaired.

Boiler rentals

Rental boilers for the Carolinas & Virginia

Most rental calls follow a failure that will take a long time or a lot of money to repair, or a new boiler that will not arrive for months. We keep multiple rental boilers and feedwater systems in a range of capacities and pressures. Our steam rental programs include start-up, logistics, part replacement and operator training, so your staff know the unit before we hand it over.

We also draw on the Thermogenics fleet. These containerized boilers ship in standard shipping containers on regular trucks with no oversize escorts, though setting them takes a crane or a lowboy trailer. With partner inventory, the range runs from 30 BHP to 2,200+ BHP. Our team walks the site, plans the piping tie-in and services the unit while it is on rent. Plan the steam connection early, because a unit 400 ft from the plant steam line can mean 2–3 weeks of piping.

Thermogenics containerized rentals

The Thermogenics containerized fleet is built around Thermocoil coil-tube steam boilers. Key specs are below; larger units and other boiler types are available through partner inventory.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Carolinas & Virginia customers

Our boiler tripped after hours. Who answers in Greensboro?

Call our Greensboro team at 336-292-8477. Emergency service runs 24/7; the office is open 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern, Monday to Friday, for maintenance planning and parts. When you call with a breakdown, give us the boiler make, the fuel and what the controls are showing, so the technician brings matching parts.

Which boiler and burner brands do you work on?

We work on all makes of industrial, commercial and institutional boilers and burners. That includes Cleaver-Brooks, Williams & Davis, Superior, Hurst, Fulton, Johnston, Columbia, York-Shipley, Victory Energy, Reimers and Thermogenics boilers, plus older Continental units. On burners and controls we cover Power Flame, Webster, Weishaupt, Maxon, Oilon, Fireye, Honeywell, Siemens and Autoflame.

Our boiler failed. Can you get us a rental?

Yes. We rent boilers and feedwater systems ourselves and can bring in containerized units through Thermogenics and partner inventory. Tell us the pressure, fuel, voltage, steam load and any local NOx limits, and where the unit will sit relative to your steam line. A short rental can cover a part on order; a longer one can bridge until a new boiler arrives.

What safety training do your technicians carry for work in our North Carolina plant?

Our technicians hold certifications and permits for working at heights, OSHA, confined space, lock-out tag-out, fall arrest, hot work and arc flash. That covers the permits most plants require before work starts inside a boiler, on a platform or at an electrical panel.

Will you come out to Charlotte or Raleigh?

Yes. Charlotte and Raleigh are both regular service areas for our Greensboro team, along with Columbia and Florence, SC. We cover North Carolina, South Carolina and southern Virginia.

Is this the same team as Matt Marshall & Co.?

Yes. Matt Marshall & Co. joined Thermogenics in 2024, and the local team and the name stay the same. The change is the backing: access to the Thermogenics containerized rental fleet, its factory-built Thermocoil boilers and extended parts inventory through Halmar Boiler Parts.

Do you service steam systems for textile and tobacco plants?

Yes. Textiles and tobacco are part of our work in the Piedmont, along with corrugated paper and chemical processing. These plants run process steam through long distribution lines, so failed traps, lost condensate and pressure swings show up quickly in the product. We survey traps, service pressure-reducing stations and feedwater systems, and tune burners so the boiler holds steady pressure.

Can you meet prequalification for a Triangle pharma site?

Usually, yes. We’re registered with Avetta, PEC/Veriforce and ISNetworld, and pharmaceutical plants and clean steam humidification are regular work for us.
