Rental Steam When the Plant Can’t Wait

Most rental calls we take start with a failure, such as a tube leak, a refractory collapse or a burner part that is weeks out. The plant still needs steam, so our job is to get temporary steam tied in while the repair or replacement moves forward. Our Greensboro team services boilers for food plants, hospitals, textile and tobacco operations, pharmaceutical sites and campuses, and that service work shapes how we set and support a rental.

Our rentals come from the entire Thermogenics East Coast fleet, which gives us more boilers and feedwater systems to choose from than any one branch could keep. That includes the group’s containerized steam boilers, and partner rental inventory fills any gap, so the unit matches your load, pressure and fuel. Part replacement and maintenance are included for as long as the unit is on rent.

When plants rent

When Carolinas Plants Rent a Boiler

Emergency Boiler Failure

Most rentals follow a failure that means a long or costly repair. Some last only 8–10 days while a part arrives. A full tube and tube-sheet job on a large firetube can run several months.

Planned Outages & Inspections

Certificate inspections under NCDOL Boiler Safety, refractory repair and tube cleaning all take a boiler offline. A rental set before the outage keeps steam on the header while the work is done.

Waiting on a New Boiler

A new boiler can take four to six months to arrive when factories are busy. A rental carries the load from the day the old unit is retired until the new one is installed and commissioned.

Extra Capacity for Production

Food plants, breweries, distilleries, textile and corrugated operations sometimes need more steam than the boiler room can make. A rental adds capacity for a production push or a new line.

Feedwater & Deaerator Outages

When a deaerator or feed system is down for inspection or repair, the boilers can’t run safely. A rental feedwater system keeps makeup water moving until the permanent system is back.

Commissioning & New Construction

New buildings and plant expansions often need steam before the permanent boiler room is finished. A rental supplies heat and process steam until the installed equipment is commissioned.

The fleet

Rental Boilers and Feedwater Systems

We rent from the entire Thermogenics East Coast fleet: boilers and feedwater systems in a variety of capacities and pressures. With partner inventory, the network covers 30 BHP to 2,200+ BHP, from firetube and watertube steam to hot water, thermal fluid, low NOx and complete boiler rooms. Its containerized units cover 150 to 500 HP on natural gas, propane or No. 2 oil.

How a rental works

From First Call to Pickup

  1. 1

    Call and Questions

We start with where the plant is and what the steam does. Then we ask about process type, pressure, fuel, available voltage, water quality, and the state or county NOx limits the rental has to meet.

  2. 2

    Site Planning

We look at where the unit will sit, crane or lowboy access, and the run to your steam line. Long piping runs take weeks to build, so we plan them first.

  3. 3

    Delivery and Set

Each unit is inspected and tested before it ships. Containerized units travel in standard shipping containers, which avoids oversized-load escorts. A crane or a rented lowboy trailer sets the unit in place.

  4. 4

    Tie-In and Start-Up

Our piping and mechanical crews connect steam, feedwater, fuel and power. We start the unit, run a combustion check and train your operators on the rental controls before we hand it over to your team.

  5. 5

    Support on Rent and Pickup

While the unit is on rent, our team handles maintenance, part replacement and repair calls. When your permanent boiler is back in service, we disconnect the rental, load it out and close the job.

Site preparation

What to Have Ready on Site

A rental goes in faster when the site is prepared. Pick a level spot close to the steam header where a crane or lowboy can reach it. Know your available voltage and fuel supply, and have someone on hand who can speak to your air permit. Condensate return and water treatment affect how the rental runs, so tell us about both.

  • Level pad or firm ground near the steam header
  • Clear access for a crane or lowboy trailer
  • Distance from the unit location to the plant steam line
  • Available electrical service and voltage
  • Fuel supply: natural gas, propane or No. 2 oil
  • Water source and current water treatment
  • Air permit and state or county NOx limits
  • A contact who can approve tie-in and shutdown times

Frequently asked questions

Boiler rental questions

How soon can a rental boiler reach our plant?

It depends on which unit fits your load and where that unit is. We draw on the entire Thermogenics East Coast fleet, so the unit may ship from Greensboro or from another East Coast location. Call 336-292-8477 and we will tell you what’s available and when it can be set.

How do you size a rental boiler?

We size the rental from your actual steam demand, operating pressure and process, which can differ from the nameplate on the boiler that failed. Containerized units from the Thermogenics fleet operate from 70–225 psig, and two-boiler units put more capacity in one container. For loads outside that range, we source a unit through the Thermogenics network.

What fuels can a rental boiler burn?

Containerized units from the Thermogenics fleet fire natural gas, propane or No. 2 oil. Fuel ties directly to emissions, so we ask early about your state or county NOx limits, and low NOx units are available when your permit calls for them. Tell us what fuel you have on site and what your air permit allows.

What do we need to prepare before the rental arrives?

You need a level spot for the unit, access for a crane or a lowboy trailer, and a clear idea of the distance to your steam line. The pipe run matters most: 400 ft to the plant line can mean 2–3 weeks of piping. We also need your voltage, fuel supply and water details.

Who maintains the rental while it’s on site?

Our Greensboro team does, as part of the rental program. We start the unit up, train your operators on its controls, and handle maintenance, part replacement and repairs while it is on rent.

Can we rent feedwater while the deaerator is down?

We rent feedwater systems that keep makeup water supplied to the boilers while a deaerator is down for inspection or repair. The Thermogenics network adds feedwater tanks and water treatment equipment. Our team also inspects and services deaerators, so we can work on the permanent system while the rental carries the load.
