Why Prime

Why Central Alberta plants call Prime in Red Deer

Red Deer is Prime’s head office and home base, between Calgary and Edmonton.

Refractory repair from 25 HP to 5,000 HP

Our crews rebuild refractory on steam, hot water and glycol boilers across that whole range, then complete the recertification paperwork that follows the repair.

Winter rental work down to −40 °C

Prime rental boilers support pipeline hydrotesting, plant turnarounds, rail car heating and vessel steaming through Alberta winters as cold as −40 °C or colder.

Backed by the Thermogenics network

Since 2026 Prime has been part of Thermogenics, a boiler group with over 10 locations across North America and its own boiler manufacturing in Aurora, Ontario.

Industries

Industries we serve in Central & Southern Alberta

Gas processing and petrochemicals drive much of Central Alberta’s steam demand. The Joffre complex near Red Deer is one of Canada’s largest petrochemical sites, and gas plants are spread across the region. South toward Lethbridge and Brooks, boiler work shifts to meat packing, sugar and food processing.

Boiler maintenance

Central & Southern Alberta boiler maintenance

Alberta boilers work through a long heating season, so you don’t want a certificate lapsing in the middle of January. Under ABSA – The Pressure Equipment Safety Authority, owners must keep every boiler and pressure vessel on a valid certificate and follow its inspection intervals. Our team handles certification and recertification, with or without the safety authority’s inspector on site, and prepares the boiler and its records before the inspection.

Planned maintenance from Red Deer covers firetube, watertube and low-water boilers over 400,000 BTU from Hurst, Saskatoon Boiler, CAMUS, Limpsfield and Oilon. Technicians test low-water cutoffs, safety valves and flame safeguard controls, tune combustion on Autoflame, Fireye, Honeywell and Siemens systems, and write up what they find so repairs can be scheduled before the coldest weeks.

Water treatment and system checks

Many boiler failures start in the equipment around the boiler. Scale in a blowdown separator, a failing steam trap or poor feedwater chemistry will shorten the life of a boiler that is otherwise sound. Prime’s water treatment programs cover steam, closed-loop hot water, glycol and cooling tower systems, and our system audits include the deaerator, condensate return and feedwater tanks.

At a polystyrene plant in central Alberta, our water treatment team cleared a scale-choked blowdown separator with a low-hazard synthetic acid in place of mineral acid. One person on site for 4 hours removed about 80% of the scale with 40 litres of cleaner, and the spent product was neutralized before discharge.

Boiler repair

Boiler repair across Central & Southern Alberta

Boiler down? Call us 24/7Emergency crews and mobile repair equipment: 403-346-8787

On an emergency call we restore steam or heat first. Our crew isolates the boiler safely, diagnoses the fault and makes the repair or fits the part. Once the boiler is firing again, we trace the cause, such as a control fault, poor water quality or a combustion problem.

Our Red Deer crews repair burners and controls, tubes, refractory, pressure vessels and piping. Prime holds ABSA Certificate of Authorization Permit AQP-21130, our quality control system for repair and alteration of Section I power boilers, Section IV heating boilers and pressure vessels, and for construction, repair and alteration of B31.1, B31.1 BEP, B31.3 and B31.9 piping. That includes feedwater tanks, blowdown separators and deaerators.

Combustion upgrades and refractory

When a repair shows the burner or controls are due, Prime can modernize them with low-NOx designs, O2 trim, digital combustion controls and remote monitoring, working with Autoflame, Lamtec, Oilon and Limpsfield equipment. Our crews also rebuild refractory, and they fabricate custom parts and pipe spools when an off-the-shelf part will not fit the job.

Boiler rentals

Rental boilers for Central & Southern Alberta

Prime’s fleet runs from a 30 BHP Scotch marine firetube to a 2,200 HP Nebraska watertube, skid- or trailer-mounted, in low and high pressure, firing diesel, natural gas or dual fuel. Watertube steam units deliver 30,000 to 110,000 lb/hr at up to 750 psig, and superheated steam trailers reach up to 750 °F. The fleet also includes low-NOx options and glycol and thermal fluid heaters.

Rentals cover plant turnarounds, pipeline hydrotesting, rail car and bulker trailer heating, vessel steaming and vapour phase cleaning, and oil storage tank cleaning support. We also rent water hoses, powered pumps, auxiliary fuel tanks and generators. When planning a rental, start with the steam connection: where the unit will sit and how far it is from your steam header decide how much temporary piping is needed, and a long run takes time to build.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Central & Southern Alberta customers

Our boiler tripped overnight. Who do I call in Red Deer?

Call 403-346-8787. Prime provides emergency service 24/7, and crews travel with mobile repair equipment. If the repair will take longer, a rental boiler can carry the load in the meantime.

Will you work on our make of boiler?

Yes. We work on firetube, watertube and low-water-content boilers over 400,000 BTU, including Hurst, Saskatoon Boiler, CAMUS, Limpsfield and Oilon, and on Autoflame, Fireye, Honeywell, Lamtec, Siemens and Oilon controls. Call with make and model to confirm.

We have a turnaround coming up. Can you size a temporary boiler for it?

Yes. Tell us the load, pressure, fuel and power available, and where the unit can sit relative to your steam line. We will match a unit from our fleet, plan the tie-in and handle start-up.

What permits does Prime hold for boiler and piping repair in Alberta?

Prime holds ABSA Certificate of Authorization Permit AQP-21130, which covers our repair and alteration of power boilers, heating boilers and pressure vessels, and our work on B31 piping. For TC-44 highway and portable tanks we hold Transport Canada Certificate of Registration 25-1156.

Will you come out to Olds, Stettler or Lethbridge?

Yes. Olds and Stettler are part of our Central Alberta area, along with Lacombe, Blackfalds and Penhold, and the team travels south to Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. Prime also has branches in Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Saskatoon and Port Coquitlam for work elsewhere in Western Canada.

Is this the same Prime Boiler Services team?

Yes. Red Deer is still Prime’s head office, with the same people and phone numbers, led by General Manager Eric Madsen. Prime now belongs to Thermogenics, so the Red Deer team can draw on the wider group’s locations and boiler manufacturing.

Can you heat water for a pipeline hydrotest in January?

Yes. Prime rental boilers heat water for pipeline hydrotests in conditions as low as −40 °C or colder. Trailer-mounted units, pumps, hoses, auxiliary fuel tanks and generators come from one supplier, and our Red Deer fill station can load water at set temperatures up to 80 °C.

Our ABSA certificate is due. Can you prep the boiler?

Yes. We prepare the boiler and its records for the inspector, certify or recertify it with or without a safety-authority inspection, and complete any repair paperwork under our permit. On a 1953 boiler at Cascades Container Board, we coordinated with ABSA and ran a 300 PSI hydrotest without shutting down the plant’s second boiler.
