Why Plains

Why Upper Midwest plants call Plains

Our people design boiler rooms, run fuel and process piping, set up burners and make code repairs. That means the same Sioux City crew can take a job from the first call to the final inspection.

Both the ‘R’ and ‘S’ stamps

We hold a National Board ‘R’ stamp for repairs and alterations to boilers and pressure vessels, and an ASME ‘S’ stamp for power boilers and code power piping.

Formal rep for Parker and Industrial Combustion

We hold rep agreements for Parker Boiler steam and hot water equipment and Industrial Combustion burners, so we quote, install and support them directly.

The Thermogenics network behind us

Thermogenics manufactures coil-tube boilers and has over 10 locations across North America. Our team draws on it for rental boilers and equipment.

Industries

Boiler maintenance

Upper Midwest boiler maintenance and service plans

Most of the boilers we look after run hard for months and then face winters that drop to -5 °F and below. Regular visits catch a weak burner, a sticking low-water cutoff or scaling tubes before winter load exposes them. We offer monthly plans with 11 inspections a year plus an annual inspection, quarterly plans with 3 visits plus an annual maintenance visit, and annual plans.

On each visit our technicians tune combustion, test the flame safeguard and safety controls, inspect refractory and check feedwater pumps and the deaerator. We work on Hurst, Johnston, Kewanee, Parker, Cleaver-Brooks and Lochinvar boilers, and on Industrial Combustion, Weishaupt, Power Flame and Webster burners.

Steam traps, water and the rest of the boiler room

Failed steam traps, a struggling deaerator or hard makeup water will shorten boiler life even when the burner is well tuned. We run steam trap surveys, deaerator inspections and water softener evaluations. U.S. Department of Energy figures show systems left alone for 3–5 years can have 15% to 30% of traps fail; regular surveys bring that to less than 5%.

We tell you what we found and what to plan for. When a boiler is near the end of its life, we plan the replacement and supply the equipment: high and low pressure steam and hot water boilers, thermal fluid heaters, burners, domestic hot water heaters and water treatment equipment.

We also offer industrial maintenance. Our technicians can supplement your plant staff, working alongside your maintenance team on boiler room and plant equipment during busy periods, outages or staffing gaps.

Boiler repair

Boiler down? Call us nowEmergency service 24/7 from Sioux City: 712-252-4797

When a boiler trips on a weekend or fails on a cold morning, call our 24/7 emergency line. We handle burner and flame safeguard faults, low-water trips, pump failures, tube leaks and refractory damage on steam and hot water boilers. First we get the boiler running again, then we find out why it failed: a control, a water problem or something else in the system.

With service technicians, welders and pipefitters on one crew, most repairs stay with one team. We retube boilers, repair individual tubes, reline refractory and castable insulation, and rebuild or replace pumps. On combustion work we service Industrial Combustion, Weishaupt, Power Flame, Webster, Maxon and Cleaver-Brooks burners, with Fireye, Siemens, Autoflame and Honeywell controls.

Code repairs, retrofits and site access

Pressure-part work has to be done to code. We make repairs and alterations under our ‘R’ stamp and build code power piping under our ‘S’ stamp. When replacement makes more sense than repair, we design and install burner retrofits, new boilers and boiler room upgrades as turn-key engineered projects.

Industrial sites often require contractor safety qualification before anyone sets foot inside. We are qualified with ISNetworld and a member of Avetta, and our technicians hold the required OSHA certifications. Your safety department can clear us ahead of time, so paperwork does not hold up an emergency call.

Boiler parts

Boiler parts and supplies from our Sioux City counter

Our parts counter is open Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and stocks new and reconditioned boiler room parts. Plant staff can walk in, call ahead or have a technician bring parts on a service visit. We also deliver to your door.

Pumps are a common bottleneck. Replacement pumps can take months to arrive, so we repair pumps and help plan replacements before one fails. What we do not keep on the shelf, we source through Thermogenics and OEM partners including Fireye, Siemens, Honeywell, Bell & Gossett and Fisher.

Boiler rentals

Upper Midwest rental boilers from the Thermogenics fleet

Most rental boilers go out after a failure, when a repair will take weeks or a new boiler is months away. Through Thermogenics we supply containerized Thermocoil steam boilers from 150 to 500 HP, built to a 250 psig MAWP and run at 70–225 psig on natural gas, propane or No. 2 oil. They travel in standard sea-can containers with no oversize escorts, and setting them takes a crane or a lowboy trailer. For larger or different needs, partner inventory runs from 30 BHP to 2,200+ BHP.

Our Sioux City team handles the local side. We walk the site with you, plan the steam and condensate tie-in, start the unit up and service it for as long as it is on rent. The steam connection usually sets the schedule: where the unit sits and how far it is from your plant steam line matter, and a 400 ft run can mean 2–3 weeks of piping.

Thermogenics rental fleet specs

The containerized fleet is built and maintained by Thermogenics. Each unit is inspected and tested before deployment and comes with installation, maintenance and 24/7 repair support.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Upper Midwest customers

Our boiler went down after hours. Who picks up?

Our 24/7 emergency line, 712-252-4797, is answered nights and weekends. Tell us the boiler make, what it is doing and any lockout codes on the flame safeguard, so the technician arrives knowing what to look for.

Will you work on our make of boiler or burner?

We service Hurst, Johnston, Kewanee, Parker, Lochinvar, Aerco, Williams & Davis, Cleaver-Brooks, Weil-McLain, Superior, Burnham and Fulton boilers. That covers high and low pressure steam and hot water boilers, thermal fluid heaters and domestic hot water heaters. On the burner side we service Industrial Combustion, Weishaupt, Power Flame, Webster, Maxon and Cleaver-Brooks, with Fireye, Siemens, Autoflame and Honeywell controls. If your make is not listed, call and ask.

Can you get us a rental boiler while ours is down?

Yes. We supply Thermogenics containerized steam boilers, and we also have our own rental partnerships outside Thermogenics for larger or different units. Our team walks your site, plans the tie-in, starts the unit and services it while it is on rent. Tell us early where the unit could sit and how far that is from your steam header, since the steam connection usually drives the schedule.

What stamps and safety qualifications do you hold?

We hold a National Board ‘R’ stamp for boiler and pressure vessel repairs and alterations, and an ASME ‘S’ stamp for power boilers and code power piping. For site access, we are qualified with ISNetworld and a member of Avetta, and our technicians hold the required OSHA certifications.

Do you send technicians outside Sioux City?

Our technicians work across the Midwest from Sioux City, as far as Fargo, Minneapolis, Pierre, Garden City, Kansas and Fort Morgan, Colorado. That includes Siouxland towns such as North Sioux City, Sergeant Bluff, Le Mars, Wayne and Onawa, and cities such as Sioux Falls, Omaha, Lincoln and Des Moines.

Is this the same team as Plains Mechanical Services?

Yes. Plains Mechanical Services is now part of Thermogenics, and the local team and the name are the same. What changed is the support behind us: Thermogenics manufactures coil-tube boilers and runs a containerized rental fleet we can draw on.

Our Iowa boiler inspection is coming up. Can you prepare the boiler?

Yes. We open and clean boilers before inspection, correct items an inspector is likely to flag and make any required repairs under our National Board ‘R’ stamp. Iowa boilers are certified by the state Boiler & Pressure Vessel Safety program (Iowa DIAL).

How do you schedule boiler work around meat plant sanitation shifts?

We schedule maintenance around production and sanitation shifts and save major work for planned shutdowns. On each visit we also check the steam traps, condensate return and feedwater that keep washdown and process steam steady.
