In Ontario, boilers and pressure vessels fall under the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), which administers the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000. The Boilers and Pressure Vessels regulation (O. Reg. 220/01) covers design registration, inspection and certificates of inspection, and the Operating Engineers regulation (O. Reg. 219/01) covers licensing of operating engineers. We do annual overhauls with the government or insurance inspector present.
Lake Ontario gives St. Catharines one of the mildest climates in the province, but winters still bring long stretches below freezing. Heating boilers and greenhouse plants run hard from late fall to spring, and that is when weak burners, worn refractory and failing pumps show up. We do seasonal maintenance before the cold sets in and check the piping, pumps and controls as well, since faults there often cause the trouble.
