In Connecticut, boiler inspection falls under the Department of Administrative Services, Office of the State Building Inspector. Commissioned inspectors from its Boiler Unit carry out internal and external inspections and issue certificates, and insurance-company inspectors also inspect insured boilers. We complete any repairs the inspector calls for under our National Board R stamp.
New Haven’s winter heating design temperatures sit around 5–10 °F, and the heating season is long, so boilers run hard from fall through spring. Salt air near the harbor speeds corrosion on stacks, breechings and outdoor piping, and humid summers bring condensation inside idle boilers. Summer is the time for retubing, refractory repairs and proper lay-up before the cold returns.
