Temporary steam and heat for BC plants

A rental boiler restores steam or heat while the failed boiler is repaired. Our Port Coquitlam team handles both jobs: the rental that carries your load, and the diagnosis, repair, recertification or replacement of the boiler that went down. This work comes up at sawmills, Fraser Valley food plants and hospital heating plants. The rental comes out when your own boiler is ready.

We match the unit to the job from Prime’s rental fleet, which serves British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. BC plants range from coastal hospitals and district energy systems to pulp mills and gas processing sites in the north. From Port Coquitlam, Vancouver and Abbotsford are each about 40 minutes by road. Kelowna is about 4 hours, and Nanaimo about 3.5 hours including the ferry crossing.

When plants rent

When BC plants rent a boiler

Emergency boiler failures

When a boiler trips and won’t relight, a rental keeps steam or heat on while we repair it. A plant without steam usually can’t run its process, so we treat these calls as urgent.

Plant turnarounds and outages

Planned shutdowns at mills and chemical plants still need steam for some systems. A rental carries that load while your boilers are opened, inspected or repaired.

Replacements and long lead times

A new boiler can take months to build and deliver. A rental bridges the gap so the old unit can come out and the new one can go in without rushing the installation.

Seasonal or extra capacity

Interior and northern winters push heating plants hard. A rental adds capacity for a cold snap, a production run or a building that has outgrown its boiler room.

Hydrotesting and rail car heating

We supply steam and heat for pipeline hydrotesting, rail car and bulker trailer heating, vessel steaming, vapour-phase cleaning and oil storage tank cleaning support.

Commissioning and new construction

New buildings and plant expansions often need heat or steam before the permanent boiler room is finished. A rental covers drying, testing and early operation until it is.

The fleet

Prime’s rental boiler fleet

Prime’s fleet has 30+ skid- and trailer-mounted units, from a 30 BHP Scotch marine firetube to a 2,200 HP Nebraska watertube rated at 750 psig. It includes low- and high-pressure steam, hot water units, superheated steam trailers up to 750 °F, low-NOx options and glycol or thermal fluid heaters, firing diesel, natural gas, dual fuel, #2 oil or LPG.

How a rental works

How a rental job runs

  1. 1

    Call and questions

We start with where the plant is and what the steam or heat serves. Then we ask about the pressure you need, your fuel, available voltage, your water and any emissions limits on the site. Those answers narrow the fleet quickly.

  2. 2

    Site walk

Before the unit ships, we go over the site with you: where the unit will sit, how a truck gets in, and how far the set location is from your steam or heating line. A long run to the header adds piping time, so we plan it early.

  3. 3

    Delivery and set

Skid-mounted units are lifted into place and trailer-mounted units roll in on their own wheels. We bring ancillary equipment when the job needs it: water hoses, powered water pumps, auxiliary fuel tanks and power generators.

  4. 4

    Tie-in and start-up

Our field crew connects steam or supply and return, feedwater, fuel, power and blowdown. We then commission the unit and check the safeties, including the low-water cutoff and flame safeguard, before it carries your load.

  5. 5

    Support on rent and pickup

While the unit is on rent, our emergency service and mobile repair equipment back it. When your own boiler is back in service, we disconnect, drain and haul the rental out.

Site preparation

What to have ready on site

A rental goes in faster when the site is ready for it. Delays usually come from the connections, so we look at how the rental will tie into your piping, condensate return and water treatment as well as where it will sit. In BC, Technical Safety BC sets the rules for installation permits, certificates of inspection and power engineer licensing, and we help you work out what applies to a temporary unit.

  • A firm, level spot for the unit with room for a crane or trailer
  • Clear truck access from the road to the set location
  • Distance from the set location to your steam or heating header
  • Available power: voltage and phase
  • Fuel supply: a gas line, or space for diesel or LPG tanks
  • Feedwater source and current water treatment details
  • A drain or blowdown discharge point
  • Any emissions or permit limits for the site

Frequently asked questions

Boiler rental questions

Our boiler just went down. When could a rental arrive?

Arrival time depends on which unit suits your load, where that unit is when you call and how far it has to travel. Call 604-855-8797 with your pressure, fuel, voltage and location and we’ll tell you which unit we can send and when. Call as soon as the boiler goes down, day or night.

How do you size a rental for our load?

We size from your load in BHP or pounds of steam per hour, your operating pressure and what the steam or hot water serves. Watertube steam units in the fleet cover 30,000 to 110,000 lb/hr at up to 750 psig. If you have nameplate data from the failed boiler, send it with your call.

Which fuels and low-NOx options do you have?

Units in the fleet fire natural gas, diesel or both as dual fuel. Superheated steam trailers run on natural gas, #2 oil or LPG. Low-NOx options are available for sites with emissions limits, so tell us about any permit conditions up front.

What should we prepare before the unit is set?

Have a level set location with truck access, a fuel supply, power at the right voltage, feedwater, a drain and a connection point to your steam or heating line. Before the unit ships, we flag anything that could slow the tie-in.

What support comes with the rental boiler?

Our Port Coquitlam field team handles start-up and commissioning. While the unit is on rent, our 24-hour emergency service and mobile repair equipment back it.

Can you heat rail cars or run hydrotests in a northern BC winter?

Yes. Our rentals support pipeline hydrotesting down to −40 °C, along with rail car and bulker trailer heating, vessel steaming and vapour-phase cleaning.
