Boiler Rentals in Edmonton & Northern Alberta

Prime Boiler Services, now part of Thermogenics, rents steam and hot water boilers from 30 BHP up to a 2,200 HP watertube, in diesel, natural gas and dual fuel, on skids and trailers. Our team sets them for breakdowns, plant turnarounds and hydrotests, with 24/7 emergency service behind every unit.

Temporary steam for Edmonton plants and the Heartland

A rental boiler puts steam or hot water back on line while your permanent unit is repaired or replaced. A failed tube, a broken refractory wall or a burner that won’t light can shut down a gas plant or a hospital heating plant, and Edmonton’s January design temperatures sit around −30 °C. From our Nisku branch, our team sets temporary boilers across the capital region, Leduc and the Industrial Heartland.

Prime also handles field service, repairs, boiler certification and shop fabrication, so the boiler a rental is covering for can be repaired by the same company.

When plants rent

When Northern Alberta plants rent a boiler

Emergency breakdowns

Many rentals start with a failure. When a repair will take weeks, we set a temporary boiler so the plant keeps steam or heat while the permanent unit is fixed.

Plant turnarounds and outages

Turnarounds at refineries, upgraders and gas plants still need steam for utilities and process loads. We size a rental to carry the plant while your own boilers are opened for inspection or repair.

Replacements and long lead times

A new boiler can take months to build and deliver. A rental covers the gap from removal of the old unit to start-up of the new one, so production continues through the changeover.

Pipeline hydrotesting to −40 °C

Winter hydrotests in Alberta need heat. Our rental boilers support pipeline hydrotesting down to −40 °C, and we can supply the water pumps, hoses, auxiliary fuel tanks and generators to complete the spread.

Rail car and tank heating

Heavy oil and other viscous products need heat to move. We rent steam for rail car and bulker trailer heating, vessel steaming, vapour phase cleaning and oil storage tank cleaning support.

Commissioning and extra capacity

New construction often needs steam before the permanent plant is ready, and a long cold snap can push an existing boiler room past its limits. A rental covers commissioning or a peak winter load.

The fleet

Our rental fleet: 30 BHP to 2,200 HP

Our fleet has more than 30 units, skid- and trailer-mounted, from a 30 BHP Scotch marine firetube to a 2,200 HP Nebraska watertube rated 750 psig. In between are low-pressure (15 psig) and high-pressure (150 psig) firetubes, Simoneau and larger watertubes up to 800 BHP, a truck-mounted 400 BHP watertube with its own generator, hot water and condensing units, superheated steam trailers, low-NOx options, and glycol and thermal fluid heaters.

How a rental works

How a rental job runs, from call to pickup

  1. 1

    Call and intake questions

We start with the basics: who you are and where the plant is, what the steam or hot water serves, the pressure you need, the fuel on site, available voltage, your water supply, any emissions limits and how far the unit will sit from the steam line.

  2. 2

    Site walk

For a larger job we look at the site. We confirm where the unit will sit, truck and trailer access, the piping run to your header, power, fuel and drains, and we look over the existing boiler room the rental will tie into.

  3. 3

    Delivery and set

The skid or trailer is delivered to site and set in place. We also rent fuel tanks, generators, pumps and hoses, so you aren’t waiting on another supplier.

  4. 4

    Tie-in and start-up

Our field technicians connect steam, feedwater, fuel and power, start up and tune the burner, and check controls and safeties before the unit goes on line. Boiler certification, with or without an ABSA inspection, is part of our regular work.

  5. 5

    Support on rent and pickup

While the unit is on rent, our team is a call away for service and emergency repairs, with mobile repair equipment. When your own boiler is back, we shut down, disconnect, drain and haul the rental out.

Site preparation

What to have ready on site

A rental goes in faster when the site is prepared. The biggest variable is the piping run: every metre between the unit and your steam or hot water header is pipe that has to be run and supported, and in a Northern Alberta winter it also has to be insulated and traced. Pick a level spot as close to the plant as you can, with room for a truck and trailer to back in. If a detail is unclear, send photos and we will work it out with you.

  • A level, firm pad close to the plant steam or hot water line
  • Clear truck and trailer access to the set location
  • Steam or hot water demand, operating pressure and process details
  • Fuel supply: natural gas line, diesel, or room for a fuel tank
  • Available power, with voltage and phase
  • Feedwater source, and condensate return if you have one
  • A safe drain point for blowdown
  • Any emissions or permit limits that apply to your site

Frequently asked questions

Boiler rental questions

Our boiler just failed. How soon can a rental be on site?

Call 780-955-7787 with your load, pressure and fuel, and we will tell you which unit we can set and when. Timing depends on the unit you need, what is already out on rent and where your site is. Fort Saskatchewan is about 50 minutes from our Nisku branch, and Fort McMurray about 5 hours.

How do we size a rental boiler for our plant?

Start from the load you actually carry; the nameplate of the boiler being replaced is only a reference. Our firetubes run from 30 BHP to 200 BHP, the watertubes from 400 to 800 BHP, and the Nebraska watertube is 2,200 HP at 750 psig. Watertube steam rentals cover 30,000 to 110,000 lb/hr up to 750 psig. We review your load and pressure with you before we pick a unit.

Can a rental run on our gas, or on diesel?

Either. Our boilers run on diesel, natural gas or dual fuel, so you can tie into the gas line on site or bring diesel in. Superheated steam trailers fire natural gas, #2 oil or LPG. Low-NOx options are available where your permit calls for them, and we can supply auxiliary fuel tanks when there is no gas service at the set location.

Can you supply superheated or high-pressure steam?

Yes. Our superheated steam trailers deliver 30,000 to 75,000 lb/hr with superheat up to 750 °F, and the Nebraska watertube is rated 750 psig. They suit energy and process plants that need more than a standard 150 psig firetube can give. Tell us the pressure and temperature at the point of use and we will match the unit.

What do you need from us before the boiler arrives?

We need a level set location close to your steam or hot water line, truck and trailer access, fuel, power with the voltage and phase, a water supply and a drain for blowdown. Let us know about any emissions limits on your site so we can plan the unit around them.

Who operates and services the rental?

Our field technicians handle start-up and commissioning, and they come back for service, troubleshooting and repairs while the unit is on rent. Who runs the boiler day to day depends on your site and its power engineering requirements under ABSA, so we settle that with you when we plan the job.
