Temporary steam and heat during a boiler outage

A potash mill or a hospital heating plant in Saskatchewan can’t sit cold while a tube sheet is rebuilt or a new boiler is built and shipped. Prime’s rental fleet covers that gap. We bring in a unit sized to your load and tie it into your system while your own equipment is out of service.

Our Saskatoon branch at 2011 Quebec Ave serves plants across Saskatchewan and Manitoba as part of Prime Boiler Services, now backed by the Thermogenics network. The Saskatoon team that rents you the boiler also handles start-up, repairs and recertification.

When plants rent

When Saskatchewan plants rent a boiler

Emergency failures

A cracked tube, a failed burner or a refractory collapse can leave you without steam. One call starts the rental while our field team works on the failed boiler.

Turnarounds and planned outages

A plant turnaround takes the main boiler offline for inspection and repair. A rental keeps steam on the header for the rest of the plant and comes off once your boiler is back.

Bridging a replacement

A new boiler can take months to build and ship. A rental carries the load from the day the old unit is pulled until the new one is commissioned.

Winter peaks and extra capacity

January design temperatures in the mid −30s °C and a heating season of seven to eight months push some plants past their installed capacity. A rental adds boiler capacity for the cold months.

Rail cars, pipelines and tanks

Prime units heat rail cars and bulker trailers, supply pipeline hydrotesting down to −40 °C, and support vessel steaming, vapour phase cleaning and oil storage tank cleaning.

Commissioning and new builds

New plants and expansions often need steam before the permanent boiler room is finished. A rental lets you test and start up process equipment while installation wraps up.

The fleet

What’s in Prime’s rental fleet

Prime’s fleet has more than 30 units, skid- and trailer-mounted. Scotch marine firetubes run 30 to 200 BHP at 15 or 150 psig. Watertubes run 400 to 800 BHP at 170 psig, including a truck-mounted unit with its own generator. The largest is a 2,200 HP Nebraska watertube at 750 psig. We also rent hot water, condensing, superheated steam and thermal fluid units, with low-NOx options.

How a rental works

How a rental job runs

  1. 1

    Call and questions

We ask where the plant is, then about your process, required pressure and load, available fuel, site voltage, water supply and any emissions limits on your permit. Those answers narrow the fleet to units that fit.

  2. 2

    Site walk

We look at where the unit will sit, how a truck or crane gets in, and how far it is from your steam line. Long pipe runs add piping time, so we plan the tie-in route before anything ships.

  3. 3

    Delivery and set

The unit arrives skid- or trailer-mounted and is set on a level spot near the tie-in. If you need water hoses, powered pumps, an auxiliary fuel tank or a generator, we can rent those with it.

  4. 4

    Tie-in and start-up

Our field team connects steam or hot water, feedwater, fuel, power and blowdown, then fires the unit and commissions it. We check the controls, the low-water cutoff and the flame safeguard before your plant takes the load.

  5. 5

    On rent and pickup

While the unit is on rent, our emergency service covers it. When your boiler is repaired or the new one is running, we shut the rental down, disconnect it and haul it out.

Site preparation

What to have ready on site

Pick a level spot as close to your header as you can and clear snow from the access route and pad. Plan freeze protection for every water, drain and condensate line, since an exposed line in a prairie winter can freeze before start-up. Have someone on hand who knows your system and can isolate the tie-in. Photos of the area help us plan the set and the piping.

  • A level, solid pad with truck or crane access
  • Isolation valves at the steam or hot water tie-in point
  • Power at the voltage the unit needs, or room for a generator
  • Fuel supply: natural gas line, diesel tank or both
  • Makeup water supply and a feedwater connection
  • A safe blowdown and drain location
  • Freeze protection for lines exposed to winter
  • Your permit’s emissions limits and site safety rules

Frequently asked questions

Boiler rental questions

Our boiler failed. How soon can a rental ship?

Timing depends on which unit fits your load and where that unit is when you call. A small skid-mounted firetube is a simpler move than a large watertube that needs heavier transport and more planning. Call 639-998-2537 with your pressure, fuel, voltage and load, and we’ll tell you what’s available and what the move involves.

How do we size a rental boiler?

We size from your steam load or heating demand, your operating pressure and the medium: steam or hot water. For larger steam loads, Prime’s watertube units run from 30,000 to 110,000 lb/hr up to 750 psig. If you aren’t sure of the load, the nameplate of the boiler you’re replacing and a look at your process give us a starting point.

No gas line on site. What fuels work?

Diesel units suit sites without a gas line, and we can rent an auxiliary fuel tank to go with them. Prime’s fleet also includes natural gas and dual-fuel units, and superheated steam trailers fire natural gas, #2 oil or LPG. Tell us about any emissions limits on your permit, since low-NOx options are available.

What should we have ready before delivery?

Have a level spot close to your steam or hot water header, access for the truck or crane, and isolation valves at the tie-in point. We also need your site voltage, fuel supply and water source. If equipment is missing, we can rent it with the boiler, and Prime’s shop service includes pipe fabrication for the connection.

Who looks after the rental while it’s on site?

Our Saskatoon team does. Our field crew handles start-up and commissioning, and our emergency service with mobile repair equipment covers the unit while it’s on rent. For longer rentals we can set up regular maintenance visits, planned around how your plant staff cover day-to-day operation.

Can you supply heat for pipeline hydrotesting in deep cold?

Yes. Prime rental units support pipeline hydrotesting down to −40 °C, which matters on Saskatchewan pipeline and oil and gas work through the winter. Tell us the line size and test schedule, and we’ll match a unit to the job.
