Boiler Rentals in Hamilton & the Golden Horseshoe

Union Boiler sets up temporary steam and hot water boilers matched to your load, pressure and fuel, after a failure or while a replacement is months away. We draw on the Thermogenics rental network and back each unit with 24/7 repairs until your own boiler is back in service.

Temporary boiler capacity for Hamilton plants

Most rental calls start with a failure: a tube leak, a cracked tube sheet or failed refractory, followed by a repair that will take weeks. Our Hamilton team works with the Thermogenics rental network to put a temporary boiler on your site. We tie it into your system and keep it running while we repair or replace your own equipment.

Around Hamilton, that means industrial plants, institutions, commercial buildings and apartment buildings that need heat through an Ontario winter. A rental can be as short as 8–10 days while a part is on order, or run several months for a full tube and tube-sheet job on a large firetube. The same team sizes the unit, plans the tie-in, and handles setup, commissioning and support until your boiler is back.

When plants rent

When Golden Horseshoe plants rent a boiler

Emergency breakdowns

When a repair will be long or costly, a rental keeps steam or heat on while we find the cause and repair the boiler.

Planned outages and inspections

A rental can carry the load during scheduled tube work, refractory repair or an annual inspection with the TSSA or insurance inspector present. We plan the tie-in before the shutdown starts.

Bridging a boiler replacement

A new boiler can take four to six months to arrive. A rental carries the plant from the day the old unit comes out to the day the new one is commissioned.

Winter peaks and extra capacity

Cold Ontario winters push heating plants to their limit. A rental hot water or steam unit adds capacity for a cold snap, a production increase or a building that has outgrown its boiler room.

Multi-residential heating

When an apartment or condo boiler fails in January, residents need heat that day. A self-contained hot water rental can carry the building while we repair, retube or replace the main boiler.

Commissioning and new builds

New construction and plant expansions can need steam before the permanent boiler room is ready. We can bring in a complete boiler-room package with feedwater, pumps, water treatment and stack, and commission it.

The fleet

Rental units from the Thermogenics network

We match the unit to the job from the Thermogenics network. Thermogenics’ own containerized rentals run 150 to 500 HP, and with partner inventory the range covers 30 BHP to more than 2,200 BHP. Types include steam firetube and watertube, hot water, thermal fluid, low NOx units and complete boiler rooms, plus feedwater tanks, pumps, blowdown, water treatment and stacks.

How a rental works

How a rental job runs, from call to pickup

  1. 1

    Call and intake questions

We start with who you are, where the plant is and what the process needs. Then we cover pressure, fuel, available voltage, water supply and quality, any emissions limits for your site, and how far the unit can sit from your steam line.

  2. 2

    Site walk

Usually, someone walks the site with you. We look at where the unit will sit, crane or trailer access and the piping route. A 400 ft run to the steam line can mean 2–3 weeks of piping, so this step shapes the schedule.

  3. 3

    Delivery and set

Each unit is inspected and tested before it ships. It travels in a standard sea can container, with no escorts or oversized-load arrangements. A crane or lowboy trailer sets it on your pad; we plan which with you before delivery.

  4. 4

    Tie-in and start-up

We connect steam or hot water, fuel, power, feedwater and condensate, then commission the unit. Our Hamilton team also does process piping, natural gas line installation and welding.

  5. 5

    Support on rent and pickup

While it’s on rent, our team handles maintenance and repairs. When your own boiler is back in service, we disconnect the rental, drain it and load it out.

Site preparation

What to have ready on site

Installs go faster when the site is prepared before the truck arrives. Plan for a level spot near the plant, room for a crane or lowboy to work, and a clear path for piping, fuel and power. In Ontario, boilers fall under the TSSA, which handles inspections, certificates of inspection and operating engineer licensing. We review what applies to your installation as part of the plan.

  • A level, solid pad sized for a 20, 30 or 40 ft container
  • Crane or lowboy access from the road to the pad
  • The shortest practical route to your steam or hot water header
  • Fuel: natural gas, propane or No. 2 oil, with supply line sizing
  • Electrical service at the voltage the unit needs
  • Make-up water supply and a plan for condensate return
  • A drain or safe discharge point for blowdown
  • Names of your plant operator and insurance contact

Frequently asked questions

Boiler rental questions

Our boiler failed. How soon can we have a rental?

As soon as the right unit is sourced and your site is ready; the timing depends on both. Some sizes are on hand in the network and others have to be sourced, and crane work or a long piping run adds time. Call with your load, pressure and fuel and we’ll give you a straight answer on timing.

How do you size the rental boiler?

We size it from your actual steam or heat demand and operating pressure, using the failed boiler’s nameplate as a starting point. Thermogenics’ containerized rentals run 150 to 500 HP, built to a 250 psig design pressure and operating from 70 to 225 psig. Partner inventory covers smaller and larger loads, and larger units are available on request.

Can a rental run without gas service?

Yes. Thermogenics rental boilers fire natural gas, propane or No. 2 oil. Tell us at intake which fuel you can supply, and we plan the supply line sizing with you.

What has to be in place before the rental boiler arrives?

A flat, solid area close to the building with crane or lowboy access, plus fuel, electrical service at the voltage the unit needs, make-up water and a drain. The distance to your steam or hot water line matters most, because every extra length of pipe adds installation time.

Who looks after the rental, and do we need licensed operators?

Our Hamilton team does. Every rental comes with installation, maintenance and repairs. Some boiler plants must have TSSA-licensed operating engineers on site, so we’ll go over what applies to the unit you rent and how it fits with your current operators.

Will you bring a rental boiler out to Sarnia or Kitchener-Waterloo?

Yes. Our service area runs from Pickering to Sarnia, including Kitchener-Waterloo, the GTA and the Niagara corridor. Kitchener-Waterloo is about 1 hour from our Hamilton branch and Sarnia about 2.5 hours. Refining and petrochemical sites often have their own site rules and emissions requirements, and we cover those at intake.
